Correction that Corrects

“A book for young mothers and governesses, treating a method of discipline, void of harshness, yet most effective in the correction of faults common to babies and small children.

Some of her “Sensible Don’ts”:

Don’t pay any attention to comments from neighbours. You are training the child. A judge will not condemn a woman for spanking a naughty child.

Don’t expect to give a sound spanking and not hear the child scream. You are spanking to cause pain.

Don’t use temper; use your hand or a paddle.

Don’t consider it too much trouble to “take down the clothes” of the child; adjust the child and hold it correctly.

Finally, do not say. “It’s too much trouble to follow details”.

If you speak thus, you brand yourself as lazy and neglectful.

Originally published during 1925 in the US for the Child Interest Publishing Company and allegedly held by the World Human Culture Foundation, Mariam Fredrick wrote this rare and most unusual book in a colloquial style reminiscent of the era. She makes recommendations that in our ‘enlightened age’ are considered entirely anachronistic.
